Renew Green VBS

We're doing the Renew Green VBS this year and I was wondering if any of you had any experience with it.  How it went, great ideas that we should try, and any feedback you might want to share.

We did it last year and it seemed to go really well.  We have kept the materials and will use it again.  I'll pass on your inquiry to our coordinator for her response.

Renew Green VBS

We are using it in Roseburg this year--June 27-30.So far, we are having fun figuring out how to be creative re-using & re-purposing stuff. At least it is cost  effective! When is your VBS? Will let you  know how our goes...

Newport Green

Sadly I am no longer a pastor, but a bureaocrat. However, before being elected bishop we did a great 'green' VBS at Atonement Lutheran. Didn't have a cirriculum, but we went online and learned how to make solar ovens with the kids - cardboard, alum foil, etc - and I managed to get men in the community in to learn how to make bio-diesel. (instructions for test batches online somewhere.)  Ours was a one day event, but you could use this sort of stuff to perk up a week long program and/or reach out to those harder to get MS, HS and adults.

What is "Renew Green VBS"?

Renew Green VBS sounds interesting. Can you tell me more about it? We are having VBS this week but I would be very much interested in this for another year. Please share. Thanks.

The Green VBS

We just finished  VBS last week here in Roseburg. We had 49 kids registered!  It went really well! There are so many activities that we were not able to do, so we will probably" re-use" it another year. The kids loved it!!! We brought in"composting "experts" and let the kids dig around in it and see the various stages of decomp. They loved, loved, loved the worms! What's not to like about dirt & worms?  We also brought in community "experts" on watersheds & worm farming.

The snacks were good as well. The kids thought using cloth napkins was "fancy."

Since we more or less contain the preschoolers, they only visited the music, snacks and games centers. We had to invent the rest of their curriculum. They did some of the same activites as the older kids, just in a separate setting Because we added a music center to the schedule, we combined snacks and games into one slot. It worked out fine.

One problem though was that they printed "Welcome " on the flipside of the banner---so one could "re-use" it for the registration area. A good thought. But 3 days after we posted the banner at a nearby intersection, somebody stole it. I guess they wanted a "Welcome!" banner since the side with the VCBS info was useless to them. Some seemingly good ideas are not always so.

If anybody has any specific questions, please ask! Have a great VBS!!!!

Worms - Cool

This stuff floats my boat. Worm bins. awesome!!

Middle schoolers are always a challenge. How about you send them out to collect recyclable bottles and cans from city parks and trash barrels? Lots of good opportunity to talk about homeless or less fortunate folk (some of whom you'll undoubted see doing the same thing.) And there is the recycling aspect. And then, ready? Go smash cans and bust bottles at the Safeway can depository. Those places are just made for middle School boys!

Green VBS

I forgot to mention that our mission project for this VBS was to collect cans & bottles. Recyling them, they raised $27 for the local food pantry. Our plant starts also were delivered to the food pantry. I had not thought of taking the plant starts to the food pantry, but one of the kids said that we should give the extras to "poor people."  We can do that! Not sure how many will actually get planted, but we gave green beans, watermelons, sunflowers and   "mystery" (unlabeled) seedlings!

vbs recipes

Our church, Christ Lutheran in Walla Walla, WA., serves a full breakfast, lunch and a snack during VBS (we call it Vacation Bible Camp). We've developed a basic menu and tweek it to include items that fit with whichever program we choose. We serve approximately 80 youth and 60 volunteers, so have expanded the recipes to fit those numbers. The food cost has been about $1,000 per year with less than $100 in store gift certificates, but all the bread donated by a bakery outlet and a gourmet bakery. If this would be of any use to you, let me know.
