Challenge

The world is changing rapidly. As a traditional church in a diverse and technological age, we are called to new birth. Financial shortfalls and a declining membership base require creative funding for innovative initiatives. The wine of 21st century ministry cries out for new wineskins.

Opportunity

  • The very challenges that perplex us signal the way forward. Already in 2010 the work of transformation has begun.
  • Cluster retreats around the state are inviting lay members and clergy into new conversations. Frail, north Portland congregations are meeting together exploring common ministry possibilities.
  • Four new partnerships with Methodist congregations have been developed since our August 2009 full communion accord.
  • BELIEVE! conversations gave birth to the Soul Cafe dream, and BELIEVE! donations have been a significant part of the start up funding.

Transformation

BELIEVE is both a place holder for a new Oregon Synod vision, and an opportunity to help fund transformation. Ten percent of all BELIEVE! donations in 2011-2013 will be given to our churchwide expression. These gifts will help support the global and national work of the ELCA. The remaining 90% of all donations will be used for the following initiatives as funding becomes available. This is the place to share your dreams for the church of tomorrow and become an very real part of the BELIEVE! Team!!
