It doesn't start with scripture study anymore.
The body of Christ will not grow from within its ranks. In most of the fastest growing and most effective new ministries happening within the Lutheran Church, it is the young un-churched who are most affected by what they're seeing being done through these ministries that work within their communities. These folks are responding to needs being met that they can relate to. These kids don't end up coming to the church of who is hosting the new ministry because they're drawn to the scripture. They're not concerned with scripture at all, and from their experience, why should they be? What's more, preaching to them is counter-productive. What draws them is that they're seeing very real positive change happening in the places they live, and that they have the opportunity to take part in that. If anything, many of these folks are put off by anything to do with any religion, especially Christianity. The un-churched of the younger generations aren't at all cognizant of what Lutherans are about. The rough ideas they have of the church are that we're all creationist, homophobic, hypocritical hyper-conservatives - because those are the loudest factions that they see represented and made fun of in popular media. Initially they take part despite their perceptions of Christianity, and will continue to do so until they see that we aren't all like that. That's when some come to services on their own, knowing they're invited to come and see in their own time, to learn more - to see for themselves who is walking the talk. I'm not saying scripture is not or should not be a fundamental and elemental part of following Christ, it just doesn't start there anymore, not for the un-churched - and the old way of thinking that it could or should start there, is in part, why the Church is in decline.
